Antioxidants in Gluco Harmony®
Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between an increase of free radical production or a reduction in the activity of antioxidant defenses or both. The powerful antioxidants in Gluco Harmony® such are effective in reducing diabetic complications, indicating that antioxidants can be beneficial either by ingestion of natural antioxidants or through dietary supplementation. Herbal Ingredients in Gluco Harmony®
Gymnema sylvestre, fenugreek, cassia bark and shilajit, are all beneficial on blood sugar levels. Banaba leaves can lower blood sugar due to acid (triterpenoid glycoside) and other phytochemicals. The phytochemicals in the leaves of banaba work at the molecular level by fine-tuning the damaged insulin receptor, which is the cause of insulin resistance. Fenugreek is used to treat numerous health problems, including insulin resistance, diabetes, poor appetite, inflammation, digestive problems and menopausal symptoms. 4-hydroxyleucine, a novel amino acid from fenugreek seeds increases glucose stimulated insulin release. Cinnamon improves blood glucose control. The most active compound in cinnamon, known as methylhydroxy chalcone polymer, mimics insulin increases glucose metabolism and effectively lowers blood glucose levels.
The Clinical Studies of ingredients
A clinical study conducted in 2011 evaluated patients who were given 10 grams of fenugreek seeds soaked in hot water and another group was not. Strict dietary and exercise controls were followed as per the guidelines of American Diabetic Association protocols. The parameters assessed were demographic profile on the first visits and fasting blood sugar levels and HbA1C every month till 6 months. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose levels in the 5th month in the study group while significant reduction in HbA1C in the 6th month.
A study conducted in 2001 evaluated 65 people with high blood sugar who took gymnema leaf extract for 90 days. At the end of the study all 65 people had lower levels. Gymnema also appeared to increase glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes. The study authors concluded that gymnema could help prevent diabetic complications in the long term.
Another study that took place in 201 and was published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, evaluated people with type 2 diabetes who consumed up to 2,000 milligrams of bitter melon per day. The researchers concluded that bitter melon showed to have a modest hypoglycemic effect.
A study conducted in 2019 evaluated 53 participants with type 2 diabetes. The groups were divided randomly into the experimental and control groups to receive either 1500 mg curcumin or placebo capsule three times a day for 10 weeks. The results indicated that daily administration of 1500 mg curcumin has positive effects in reducing fasting blood glucose and weight in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Another study conducted in 2003 studied a total of 60 patients, who were randomized to receive 1,3, or 6 grams of cinnamon daily or a placebo. The background medication consisted of sulphonyureas only. At the end of 40 days, all 3 doses of cinnamon caused a significant decrease in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol.
